Pentecost: The Flame Still Burning
As we celebrate Pentecost this year, we find ourselves in the middle of a world that feels both incredibly fast-paced and profoundly fragmented. It is 2026, and the digital noise of our era often threatens to drown out the “still, small voice” of the Holy Spirit. Yet, as we gather in our pews today, we are reminded of a truth that transcends time: the same fire that descended upon the Upper Room is the very heat that warms our hearts today.
The Reading from Acts tells us that when the Spirit came, it wasn’t just a private, spiritual experience; it was a public eruption of grace. It broke down language barriers, healed divisions, and sent a group of fearful individuals out into the streets as bold witnesses.
In our parish life this year, the Holy Spirit is asking us the same question He asked the Apostles:
“Are you ready to leave the Upper Room?”
· It is easy to treat our faith as a comfort—a place to come for solace when the world outside feels too heavy. But Pentecost is the antidote to comfort. It is our “birthday” as a Church, and like any birthday, it marks a beginning. The Spirit is not given to us to be kept, but to be spent.
· Perhaps the “tongues of fire” this year look like a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding, a new ministry you’ve been afraid to join, or simply a commitment to be more present to the people in your own home. The Holy Spirit is the advocate who nudges us out of our circles of safety and into the lives of our neighbours.
· As you leave Mass today, I invite you to pay attention to the “breezes” of the Spirit in your own week.
Where are you being called to speak a word of encouragement?
Where are you being asked to bridge a divide?
Where can you manifest the peace of Christ in a world that is so often at war with itself?
Pentecost is not a historical event we remember; it is a current reality we inhabit. Let us go forth not as people who are merely “attending” a church, but as people who are being sent by the Fire.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love.
