Reflecting on the Way, the Truth, and the Life / the 5th Sunday of Easter
As we journey through this Easter season, our readings this week invite us to look beyond the immediate challenges of our daily lives and fix our eyes on the foundation of our faith: Jesus Christ.
· In our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we see the early Church grappling with the practical tensions of growth. The apostles realised they could not do everything alone; they had to rely on the Holy Spirit and the cooperation of the community to serve the needs of the marginalised. It is a powerful reminder that the “work of the Church” is not a solo act, but a collective witness of service and love.
· St. Peter deepens this thought in the second reading, calling us “living stones” built into a spiritual house. Sometimes we may feel small or insignificant in the grand scope of the world, but Peter reminds us that each of us is chosen, precious, and essential to the structure of God’s kingdom. We are not just bricks in a wall; we are vital participants in the life of the Body of Christ.
· However, it is in this Sunday’s Gospel that we find the heart of our mission. When Thomas asks, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus gives the answer that has anchored Christians for two millennia: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
In a world that often feels fractured and filled with conflicting “truths,” Jesus offers us a singular, steady path. He does not provide a map of external directions; He offers a relationship. Following Jesus isn’t about checking off a list of rules; it’s about walking in His footsteps—loving as He loved, serving as He served, and trusting in the Father as He did.
As we go about our week, let us ask ourselves:
Am I allowing Jesus to be the ‘Way’ in my decision-making? Is He the ‘Truth’ I turn to when I am confused? Is He the ‘Life’ that fuels my joy and my service to others?
May we be emboldened to live as the “living stones” we are called to be, supporting one another in our parish family and witnessing to the Risen Lord in all that we do.
