In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that loving God is number one, but number two is loving our neighbour, and number two is very much like number one. In case we’re not sure who our neighbours are, their identity is spelled out clearly for us in the first reading – anyone who needs help, anyone who does not have the power to take care of their own needs. And in case we’re not sure if this works or not, the success of the Thessalonians to imitate Christ, Paul, and the other early Christians is clearly documented in the second reading. When we imitate Christ, others will imitate us. The way of Jesus works, and it is as simple as the word love.
