Holiness and love are proclaimed with today’s reading. But Jesus takes us a step further. We are to strive to be perfect. The old law to take “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” is no longer our law. We are to love even our enemies. We are to give to those who take from us and to let people hit us a second time after they have hit us a first time.
